Causes of Vitiligo
Vitiligo is an abrupt skin condition in which the skin pigmentation fades resulting into white or colourless patches. This condition happens when the pigment ‘melanocytes’ cells gets destroyed or killed. Melanocytes are the cells which produce melanin pigment and it gives colour to our skin, eyes and hairs.
These are the most acceptable reasons for white spots:
1. Autoimmunity: This remains the most known considered reason. As the immune system mistakenly kills and destroys the melanocytes. Due to this pigment production stops resulting into a pale or bright white spot.
2. Genetical Inheritance: This is also a popularly known cause established for White patches. Families in which parents or grandparents have vitiligo inheritance are seen to be more prone of having vitiligo due to genetical connection.
3. Odd Food combinations: Food habits, Odd food intake, Vitamin C excess intake, Harsh antibiotics for longer duration are also seen to having caused white de-pigmented dots in many cases.
4. Stress: Vitiligo has seen psychosomatically connected. Sudden trauma, loss, prolonged depression causes it in some cases.
What is Vitiligo and How Does Ayurveda Explains this?
The most respected "forefathers" of Ayurveda, Maharshi Charaka and Maharshi Sushruta, both wrote about “Shwitra” more than five thousand years ago.
Sushruta Samhita: Describes it as “Kilas” or “Shwitra”. It is specifically defined as a "dry" condition (as no liquid or discharge), where the skin only loses its colour.
Charaka Samhita: Explains that imbalance of diet & lifestyle as the causative factor behind Shwitra. It is classified as Rakta Dosa (blood-related disorder) that happens deep under the skin's surface.
What causes Vitiligo as per Ayurveda.
Among the three doshas, pitta is responsible for colouration of skin tone and particular type of pitta exactly responsible for pigmentation on skin is termed “Bhrajak Pitta”. Destruction of Bhrajak Pitta and Vata Dosha can cause “Shwitra”.
As mentioned in almost all Ayurveda textbooks “Shwitra” is caused due to vitiation of Tridosha – ‘vata’, ‘pitta’ &’ kapha’ and Dhatus as- Ras, Rakta, Mans and Med.
In western medicine, the symptom of “Shwitra” looks much like vitiligo. It is a skin condition, in which due to loss of melanocytes cells activity pigment production gets paused. As a result, colour loss of skin occurs. As per looks it can be disturbing.
The treatment in modern medicine is applicable creams which may contain corticosteroids, UV radiations, skin grafting and tattooing etc. Which could be harmful for the patients due to side effects of chemicals? And these have temporary effects only.
How many Types of Vitiligo are there?
Types of vitiligo is classified as per its appearance over skin. Here are some of the types:
Focal - This pattern has few scattered patches located in a small areawith slow spreading rate.
Segmental - This type has asymmetrical orunilateral appearance as happens to one side of body or without any pattern. It comes fast but generally stable kind of vitiligo. Generally found more in kids.
Acro-facial - Patches appears on face and other areas mainly extremeties- hands, feet, adround fingers & around the lips.
Vulgaris- Most common type, mostly symmetrical such asif comes left hand & comes on right hand too on same area. Mostly comes on bony prominances.
Universalis - It is a rare type in which more than 80 % of body area gets affected.
